Upstream Ayeyawady Projects

The hydropower projects in the upstream of the Ayeyawady River are located in Kachin State in the north of Myanmar with the average distance of less than 100 kilometers from the China-Myanmar border.

Total project investment is over USD 30 billion.

It is planned to construct 7 cascade hydropower stations and 1 construction power supply station (renamed as Chipwi Nge HPP with 99MW already in operation).

Total installed capacity is 21,600MW with an average annual energy output of about 110 billion kWh.

Upstream Ayeyawady River Hydropower Project is located in the hinterland of the BCIM Economic Corridor and it is an energy engine for promoting China-ASEAN connectivity, the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.

The project will firstly meet the electricity demand in Myanmar, helping Myanmar solve its power shortage of its population without electricity access, and turn its resource advantages into financial advantages to drive its economic development.

It will promote the upgrading of Myanmar's electricity industry and related industries.
